Cookie Privacy

Amended 1st  March, 2024

INTRODUCTION

When you visit our sites, we use automated tools to collect information about you and your visit.

Those tools include cookies, web beacons, pixels, JavaScript and web server logs. And by our “sites”, we mean our websites, mobile apps, electronic newsletters and other services.

This Cookie Policy explains how we use the tools, and how you can control them.

The tools’ use might involve personal information processing, so, for more information on that: https://www.housingnet.com.au/privacy-policy

What are cookies, web beacons and pixels?

A cookie

is a small text file that a website sends to your device. It uniquely identifies your browser or stores information in it.

Web beacons and tracking pixels

are bits of data that count the number of users who access a website and track how they use it. We use web beacons to see how successful an article has been, or whether an email message was successfully delivered and read, for example. Web beacons are also used to verify any clicks on links or ads contained in emails. We might use this information to learn which emails are more interesting to you, and to tell advertisers how many people have clicked on their ads.

Tracking URLs are special links that tell us when people click on links. We use them to measure the effectiveness of campaigns and the popularity of our content.

What information do we get from cookies?

The information we get from cookies varies, but it can include your:

  • IP address

  • mobile device advertising ID

  • browser characteristics

  • device characteristics

  • unique device ID

  • operating system

  • language preferences

  • referring URLs

  • logs on actions you take on our sites, such as the content you click on, and the dates and times you visit.

What do we use cookies for?

Cookies can recognise you and remember important information, like your preferences. They make it faster and easier for you to use our sites. They let us show you information that’s relevant to you, including advertising. And they generally improve your overall experience of our sites.

The information we get through cookies can also tell us, for example:

  • if you’ve used our sites before

  • what country you’re in

  • what content you’ve visited

  • whether you’ve opened an email we sent to you

  • what search queries you may have run

  • what advertisements you may have seen on our sites.

We may also use cookies to link your use of our sites to personal information we collect about you. Let’s imagine you’ve searched our sites for new apartments in the CBD. With cookies, we can show you other new apartments in nearby suburbs, instead of property types or locations that aren’t interesting to you.

What cookies do we use?

Our sites use different types of cookies, including:

  • First-party cookies: The cookies we place on your device when you visit our sites.

  • Third-party cookies: Cookies that are set by a website other than ours when you visit our sites.

  • Persistent cookies: These cookies stay on your computer or mobile device for a time that’s specified in the cookie itself. They’re activated each time you visit the site that created that particular cookie. They might stay on your device after your browsing session ends.

  • Session cookies: Session cookies let us link your actions during a browser session on our sites. A browser session starts when you open the browser window and finishes when you close it. Once you close the browser, all session cookies are deleted.

They’re the types of cookies we use. But what do we use them for? Here’s the breakdown.

Strictly necessary cookies

These cookies are essential to our sign-up and log-in processes. They let you use the sites’ features. Without them, you won’t be able to take full advantage of our services and our sites won’t perform smoothly for you. These are mostly session cookies that are deleted when you close your browser. They might collect:

  • encrypted user session identifiers

  • device identifiers

  • demographic information

  • log-in identifiers

  • information that we need to authenticate you on multiple sites.

Functionality cookies

We sometimes use these to remember the choices you make while browsing our sites. They also let us provide better, more personalised content and features. We might use them to:

  • customise a certain webpage

  • remember your preferred language or username

  • provide other services you ask for, like watching a video or commenting on a blog.

When you connect to our sites, our servers receive and record information about your computer, device and browser. That might include your IP address, browser type and so on. If you access the sites from a mobile device, we may collect a unique device identifier assigned to that device (called “REAUID”). We might also collect geolocation data or other web-traffic information for that device.

Analytics cookies

We and our service providers also use analytics cookies. These collect information about the way you use our sites, so we can create statistical reports on the sites’ performance. They also let us show content that suits your interests.

These cookies collect information such as:

  • your IP address

  • device type

  • operating system

  • referring URLs

  • country information

  • date and time of page visits

  • which pages you visit the most.

That information lets us:

  • count our audience size

  • see how people generally use our sites

  • record any difficulties you have with the sites

  • understand how effective our advertising is.

This information is de-identified when we no longer need it.

Targeting and advertising cookies

We use cookies to show ads that are relevant to your interests.

For example, we show ads based on your previous browsing activity. That’s called “online behavioural advertising”. The cookies remember the websites you’ve visited. Then, that info is used to show particular ads when you visit websites that use the same ad networks. Imagine you look at a new three-bedroom house on our site. Cookies might be used to show you ads for that house on social media platforms or other websites.

These cookies might also be combined with other information we get from third parties. We might also share cookie info with other organisations, under relevant laws. Finally, these cookies might let us target you with ads that relate to your geographic location.

Social networking cookies

We might also use these cookies to track members and non-members of social networks. We do this for behavioural advertising, analytics, and market research purposes, among others.

How do third parties use cookies on this site?

We work with third parties to provide services on our sites.

For example, we use analytics services from other companies who create cookies on our behalf. We might use the information to customise what we show you, and for the other purposes we discussed above. These companies may also send the information to others for processing, or where it’s required by law.

Third-party advertisers and others, like research partners, might also use cookies to collect information about your activities on our sites. They might combine that info with other info they get from third parties, so they can show you more relevant ads on our sites, and third-party sites. Moreover, they might use the info themselves. For example, they might use it to measure how well their ads work, or track usage statistics.

We might not control or have access to these third-party cookies. How they’re used may be governed by the privacy policies of these third parties.

How can you control the cookies?

You can stop cookies from being downloaded to your device through the settings on your browser. Most browsers will let you:

  • stop accepting new cookies

  • get notified when you receive a new cookie

  • disable existing cookies.

Our Apple iOS Apps meet Apple’s App Tracking Transparency requirements. The apps don't track users for personalised advertising purposes. They do not link your user or device data with data collected from third-party apps, websites or offline properties. Your data is not used for targeted advertising or advertising measurement purposes. It's not shared with data brokers, either.
